Welcome to the inaugural edition of this newsletter from the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Zambia to the United Nations here in New York. The newsletter was officially launched alongside a new website on 30th June 2023, and will be published every quarter.
We have worked tirelessly to put together an excellent website and there could not have been a better time to launch it than now. Both the newsletter and website are critical to the work of the Permanent Mission as they will serve to keep you abreast with the Mission’s activities at the UN, as well as endeavor to provide news in general about Zambia. The new website is now live and located at http://localhost/pmz.
This first edition, which covers the period April to June, will feature President Hakainde Hichilema’s peace mission to Ukraine and Russia and the recent participation by Her Honour Mrs W.K. Mutale Nalumango, Vice-President of the Republic of Zambia, in the Midterm Review of the Sendai Framework on Disaster Risk Reduction which took place at the United Nations in New York.
It also discusses the launch of Professor Chaloka Beyani as Zambia’s candidate for the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for the term 2024 to 2033. Vice-President Nalumango launched the campaign for Prof Beyani on the sidelines of the Midterm Review of the Sendai Framework on Disaster Risk Reduction.
Prof Beyani has over four decades of experience in international law, multilateralism, mediating peace, international and constitutional law making. He is contesting the position alongside candidates from the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Africa, Egypt, Mexico, Russia, Australia and only five candidates will be elected.
This newsletter will also feature articles on the election of Zambia as a member of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and Vice President of the General Assembly. It will also highlight the two African countries that have joined the Security Council as non-permanent members.
Also look out for an article on Hon. Doreen Mwamba, M.P, Minister of Community Development and Social Services who led the Zambian delegation to the 16th Session of the Conference of State Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPC) at the UN Headquarters in New York.
