New York, USA 13.02.25 – Speaker of the National Assembly Ms. Nelly B K Mutti, SC, MP, FAPRA is participating in the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Hearing which commences today, 13th February 2025 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
Ms. Mutti is one of the panelists at the opening session of the hearing being held under the theme “Scaling up action for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): finance institutions, and politics.”
The hearing will address critical issues such as the poor knowledge of SDGs at the national level, uneven parliamentary engagement, aid effectiveness, tax reforms, debt crisis, and international trade challenges to help reboot the SDGs pursuant to the recommendations of the Pact of the Future that was adopted in September 2024.
Participation in the IPU hearing is essential for Zambia as it helps strengthen the country’s foreign policy, promotes national interests, and contributes meaningfully to global efforts towards sustainable development. By leveraging these engagements effectively, Zambia can achieve progress in this critical area.
The hearing will also help provide a parliamentary contribution to the preparatory process for the Fourth UN Conference on Financing for Development scheduled for July this year.
Ms. Mutti is also expected to participate in a session entitled, “The deep challenge of the SDGs: Mobilizing political will.” This session expects participants to reflect on the political reasons that are making it difficult to implement the SDGs with appropriate laws and budgets.
And the Speaker on 12th February participated in the Third Meeting of the Preparatory Committee (PrepCom) for the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament.
The Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, which is held every five years, is scheduled to take place in Geneva from 29th to 31st July 2025.
Speakers, parliamentarians, and various experts met ahead of the IPU hearing to deliberate on modalities for the Speakers World Conference.
Meanwhile, Zambia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Dr. Chola Milambo implored the Speaker to foster the implementation of SDGs by the government through the legislative, representative, and oversight functions of the National Assembly.
He also committed closer collaboration between the Permanent Mission and Parliament going forward.
The IPU is a global organisation of national parliaments. It was founded in 1889 as the first multilateral political organisation in the world. IPU promotes peace, democracy and sustainable development.
Speaker Mutti is accompanied by Mongu Central MP, Hon Oliver Amutike, Deputy Clerk – Administration, Mrs Loveness Mayaka, and other staff from the National Assembly of Zambia.
