SPEAKER MUTTI REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO ACHIEVEMENT OF SDGS

New York, USA 16.02.25 – Speaker of the National Assembly Ms Nelly B K Mutti, SC, MP, FAPRA attended the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Hearing held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York where she reaffirmed Zambia’s commitment to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The hearing, co-hosted by the IPU and the President of the United Nations General Assembly, underscored the need for coming together to address the issue of SDGs. The hearing noted that by coming together, a future that is more just, equitable, and sustainable for everyone, everywhere could be delivered. The hearing called for cooperation and partnerships in the attainment of the SDGs.

The IPU, a global organisation of national parliaments founded in 1889, promotes peace, democracy and sustainable development.

The hearing served as an opportunity for Zambia to learn from other countries’ successful experiences and best practices in implementing the SDGs.
Given that progress is off track on many SDGs, the hearing provided a critical platform for Zambia to highlight the specific challenges it faces, which can lead to targeted support and new commitments from donors and other stakeholders.

And Ms. Mutti highlighted that Zambia attaches great importance to the SDGs, as evidenced through the establishment of the Parliamentary Caucus on SDGs in 2016.

On SDGs one and two (no poverty and zero hunger), the Speaker highlighted that Zambia has put in place measures such as the Eighth National Development Plan (8NDP) as well as debt restructuring to tackle poverty, and poverty eradication.

Ms. Mutti also pointed out the implementation of social protection such as the social cash transfer and cash for work programmes as some of the measures that have been put in place to ensure that the underprivileged are cushioned from the worst effects of hunger.

The Speaker participated in a panel discussion held during the opening segment of the Parliamentary Hearing, where she reaffirmed Zambia’s commitment to the implementation of the SDGs.

The two- day hearing was held from 13th to 14th February 2025. On 12th February, the Speaker attended the Third Meeting of the Preparatory Committee (PrepCom) for the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament scheduled for 29th to 31st July 2025 in Geneva, Switzerland.
